Reading Intervention At Its Finest:

Orton-Gillingham

for

Learners Struggling in Decoding and Encoding Skills

Wade® and Additional Battery Testing

An initial assessment will take place in the first session utilizing the WADE® Assessment (Wilson Assessment of Decoding and Encoding). The Wilson Assessment is a curriculum-based measure which specifically assesses a student's decoding and encoding skills correlating to the word structures taught in the Wilson Reading System.
Students will be evaluated prior to instruction to identify a starting point and to begin the data collection process. The WADE is aligned to the scope and sequence of the Wilson Reading System in order to guide instruction and determine level of mastery.
Students will also receive one or more additional battery assessments depending on the needs that present themselves during the evaluation. A report is generated that will be issued to the parent or guardian and any other agencies/school districts that the parent wishes to include in the correspondence. These batteries may include the PAST, McLeod, PSI/ESI, SDQA, EasyCBM/Dibels, ADS (ReallyGreatReading), Tattum Assessments, Smartt and Glaser Phonics Screener, and other diagnostics that will help give a full-rounded evaluation of the student's abilities and needs.

The Orton-Gillingham Program

This program is a straightforward program that starts with teaching the most basic skills of letter(s) and sound correspondence. This involves matching sounds with letters or groups of letters, recognizing different syllables, and using syllables to read and spell. Students receive continued spiral review to strengthen areas of weakness while ensuring new introductory of concepts to prevent stagnation.
Orton Gillingham uses a unique "sound-tapping" technique that will assist students in breaking down and blending syllables and words by tapping out each sound or sound combination. Programs such as WRS, Really Great Reading, and IMSE will incorporate sound tapping into lesson and concept development. Multiple skill areas are taught including letter-sound recognition, comprehension, reading fluency, and spelling.

Orton-Gillingham Pricing

As a certified Orton-Gillingham Instructor (through the Dyslexia Training Institute and the University of San Diego) and also formally trained in Wilson Reading System, Wilson Fundations, IMSE, Really Great Reading, LearnUp/Tattum Reading, and Brain Friendly Reading, I am highly trained to provide these services to learning disabled youth and adults. Fees are reflective of the services rendered at this advanced professional level.
My fees are for initial testing (which includes the WADE and additional professional batteries depending on the need to further identify any outlying weaknesses) and lesson instruction. The initial assessment is a mandatory step before beginning the instructional sessions unless a student has had a recent professional evaluation where the data can be shared with me to use as a platform for developing the proper scope and sequence of instruction.
This program is a very individualized and strategic program built upon even the weakest readers learning and finding success.

Other Programs Offered: Standard Reading Comprehension Tutoring

Specialized Reading Comprehension Tutoring

Outside of Orton-Gillingham, specialized reading tutoring is also offered for students who possess the skill set for decoding and encoding words but struggle in other areas of reading development which can include literal, inferential, evaluative, and applied comprehension.

  • Literal Comprehension includes identifying the facts in a text such as data, dates, traits, and settings

  • Inferential Comprehension includes building on the facts stated in the text and more abstract areas of development such as predictions, visualization, and sequencing

  • Evaluative Comprehension includes the judgement of text presentation such as fact versus opinion, validity of information, comparison of text or situations presented, and cause-and-effect

  • Applied Comprehension includes the identification of elements and a text-based response using the author's language, imagery, style, and purpose

Specialized READING COMPREHENSION Tutoring

Cognitive Strategies of Effective Readers

Struggling readers need strategic instruction in areas of inference, identifying meaning, self-monitoring, questioning, summarizing and recognition of text structure, metacognition, and visual-organization.

Targeted instruction includes a focus on these different areas of comprehension to build competence and acquisition of skills in areas needing remediation.

The following skills are the levels of reading development that start with phonemic awareness and end with comprehension. When students struggle in the lower components eventually this translates in a weakness in comprehension.
  • Comprehension
  • Vocabulary
  • Fluency
  • Word Reading/Decoding
  • Phonemic Awareness
Each learner will be assessed to see where in the bottom to top scale his/her weakness begins. This is why there is no one-size-fits-all approach to tutoring instruction as every learner has varied leveled of strengths and weaknesses and the best form of remediation is through a targeting and strategic approach.
*A standard diagnostic assessment is given for students to better understand areas of deficit and to develop a strategic and targeted individualized intervention plan.

Identify Areas of Weakness

Specific areas of weakness need to be identified to guide the course of tutoring instruction.

Develop a Plan

Targeted intervention and the practice of necessary skill set development will take place in every session.

Find Success

Learners will use the newly acquired skills to develop good habits in reading that carry over into curricular instruction in the school setting.
